Supporting Our Communities
As a company, our commitment to support the communities in which we work and live has never been stronger. Giving to those in need and enriching people's lives is a deep-rooted philosophy that has become an integral part of our corporate culture, and extends to our associates all around the world as well.
With 2017 being notable for the number of devastating storms and natural disasters in the United States, the Caribbean, and elsewhere in the world, many of our customers — as well as many of our own Foot Locker, Inc. associates — were significantly affected by these events. In the aftermath, our Company and our associates brought to life our core value of supporting our communities by uniting to produce positive change during a time of incredible need.
Beyond monetary contributions from the Foot Locker Foundation to the American Red Cross and our long-standing partner, The Two Ten Footwear Foundation, our merchant and marketing teams within the U.S. joined forces to donate shoes, apparel, and socks to families in need in the areas affected by hurricanes, wildfires, and other events. We also encouraged consumers to donate to the Red Cross through a nationwide in-store and online fundraising campaign for all those affected by the storms. In addition, we spearheaded an emergency response effort providing early shipments of much-needed supplies, including water, food, and toiletries, and launched a philanthropic platform as part of our sixth annual Week of Greatness campaign, centered on support for victims of Hurricane Maria.
The Foot Locker Foundation also continued to promote a better world for today's youth through educational initiatives and programs that encourage health and well-being through physical activity. The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program has been a hallmark of the Foot Locker Foundation's efforts to support our communities since its launch in 2011. The Scholar Athletes Program awards $20,000 college scholarships to 20 exceptional students who demonstrate academic excellence and exemplify strong leadership skills both in sports and within their communities, and so far the program has invested almost $2.5 million in the education and future of some of America's most promising scholar athletes. Beyond this program, we have also raised millions of dollars in support of higher education through our annual "On Our Feet" fundraising gala, benefitting hundreds of students through a joint scholarship program with our partner, UNCF.
Since 2014, Kids Foot Locker has teamed up each year with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to run The Kids Foot Locker Fitness Challenge, which promotes physical fitness among today's youth. The national program challenges Club kids within select markets each year through a six-week "Fitness Challenge" with a variety of physical fitness activities, urging them to be more active on a daily basis.
The Company continues to dedicate significant resources to key causes that connect closely with our customers, associates, suppliers, and shareholders domestically and internationally. Our support of programs and initiatives, such as The Fred Jordan Mission, American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, The Pluryn Foundation in The Netherlands, The Starlight Children's Foundation in Australia, and the Special Olympics in Canada, provide associates with opportunities to connect with important social issues while making positive contributions around world.
